Reduce protein intake or reduce weight?

Reduce protein intake or reduce weight? Which of the two approaches should be applied first in obese patients with proteinuric glomerulopathies? Preliminary results of a new sequential and dietary approach on 15 patients.

Made in collaboration with the US nephrology hospital of Orbassano (TO) and the University of Torino.

This is the second study presented at the first course of CME Diabesity Working Group of ERA-EDTA which was held in Tenerife.

The purpose of this report was to discuss the results obtained in obese or overweight patients affected by proteinuric glomerulopathies with a new approach, which involved two consecutive diets: first, an intense and short-term weight loss diet followed by a low-protein and long-term diet, both based on the patients characteristics and on personal preferences, in a multiple food choice.

Although still in progress, the study suggests that a consecutive combination of intense weight loss and low-protein diet could be successful at weight loss in patients with proteinuric glomerular diseases, with a dietary customized approach to overweight and obesity, while always maintaining lean mass and controlling the hyperfiltration and proteinuria.

In this context, a strict follow-up and a dedicated multidisciplinary nutritional program based on flexible and qualitative multiple food choice, were the key to success.
