"Super Size Me" is a documentary movie that talks about the extreme experiment of Morgan Spurlock to demonstrate the negative effects of junk food to our body. In the movie he will eat only fast-foods for a period of 30 days. Can you guess the results of the experiment?

This is a really interesting documentary style movie to watch for whoever is interested in healthy nutrition.

The case

In 2002, in the USA, two girls sued a famous fast-food chain blaming it for their obesity issue.

As a defense response, the fast-food chain stated that there was no evidence that would show the correlation between fast-food nutrition and obesity.

Spurlock's challenge

Due to this reason, Mr. Spurlock, decides to demonstrate the negative and harmful effects of junk food to the body by undergoing this experiment: He decided to nourish his body in this famous fast-food chain for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a whole month.

He didn't eat from any where else nor did he buy any other foods. Additionally, he reduced his physical activity to the average American person, which is 2500 steps per day.

He would also accept, everytime he was asked, the Super Size meal.

Before the experiment

Before starting this study, the writer (33 years old, 188 cm of height and 84 kilograms of weight) followed through with doctors to ensure his health condition was fine. Doctors and specialists certified that Spurlock's psycho-physical conditions were perfect.

After the experiment

  • Weight gain of 11 kilograms (corresponding to the 18% of his body mass)
  • Depression, lethargy, and headaches
  • The discomforts mentioned would reduce right after the consumption of the fast-food meal. This is the meaning of the established dependency.
  • Decrease of the libido
  • Loss of energy
  • Liver problems
  • Tachycardia and risk of more serious heart issues

The American reality

  • Spurlock's fat body mass hit the 18%. Doctors defined this level to be dangerous, but it is still lower than the American standard, which is of 22%.
  • In one month period, he was offered 9 Super Size Menus, 5 of them in Texas, which represents the American State with the highest obesity level.
  • The cause of the obesity rate, especially among children, are advertising and the lack of healthy food in schools.

In the last couple of years fast-foods businesses have opened everywhere, from the small towns to the big city.

Let's stop and think when the next time we want to reward or spend time together with the family at a fast-food.

There are plenty of alternatives. Let's opt for a outside event: picnic, healthy foods, and movements all together!
