Are eggs healthy or not? This is one of the most frequently asked questions in the kitchen. Although the potentials of this food are many, the greatest concern is the high cholesterol content. Over time, a widespread belief that eggs consumption has adverse effects on the liver has taken place. But, is it really so? Find out in this article!

A source of energy rich in essential nutrients

The egg deserves one of the first spots in the ranking among the richest source of essential nutrients. In time of war, when reserves of proteins were scarce, they saved many lives. The human body synthesizes perfectly the source of egg proteins and that is why it is considered a very good standard for completeness and balance of amino acids.

The most appreciated egg is the chicken egg and normally weights around 50/60 grams.  An egg of such dimension contains about 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fats. The egg white is rich in water, sodium, and potassium. The yolk contains high biological values protein, necessary for the body. Eggs also contains phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, vitamins (A, B1, B2, D and PP) and a good amount of iron.

The benefits of eggs

Eggs help our body to:

  • prevent the macular degeneration of the eye by acting as a natural health supplement
  • prevent the formation of blood clots and heart attacks
  • prevent breast cancer
  • keep hair, nails, and skin healthy
  • the content of choline helps to regulate the nervous system and cardiovascular system
  • its high restorative power is useful to provide energy to the body

Are eggs bad for the liver? False!

Despite the undisputed nutritional qualities, eggs are often been the subject of false beliefs and prejudices that have greatly reduced their consumption.

The most common belief is that egg consumption has an adverse effects on the health of the liver.

In reality the egg yolk helps the gallbladder to contract and direct the bile into the intestine, where it helps to improve the digestion of fat and stimulate peristalsis.

The egg, therefore, helps to mobilize the gallbladder avoiding stagnation of bile and gallstone formation.

Cholesterol and eggs: the opinion of the scientists

The scientific community has officially denounced the risk related to the content of cholesterol in eggs. Researchers at Harvard University conducted a study on a sample of 120, 000 subjects followed fora period of 15 years. The results do not identify any increased cardiovascular risk among those who had regularly consumed an egg a day. More specifically, no correctly performed study has ever detected an increase in cholesterol after the assumption of eggs.
